UNEP's Sustainable Buildings and Climate Initiative (UNEP-SBCI) has, together with Skanska and other partners, assessed ways and means for Greening the Building Supply Chain, which constitutes the purpose of this new report. While there is increasing awareneness and efforts to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from buildings, the work to realize reduced material use, water consumption and waste generation in the overall delivery of buildings and throughout the construction system have been less advanced.

The report is based on the efforts of a Task Force on Greening the Building Sector Supply Chain, launched by UNEP-SBCI in fall 2012 to better understand resource use in the building and construction supply chain. This report identifies priorities for potential green and greener interventions in the sector, and provides recommendations for future activities and collaborations for UNEP-SBCI to promote greater resource efficiency, including through efforts under a future Sustainable Buildings and Construction programme within the 10 Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production, adopted at the last United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development Rio+20.
